PC Died Shortly After Cleaning and Now Fails CPU/DRAM Checks

I lightly cleaned my six-month-old PC using pressurized gas and a vacuum, mainly around the fans. It booted normally afterward, and the coolant temperature was actually a little lower than usual. About 10–15 minutes later, it suddenly powered off without a blue screen and now will not start normally.

Whenever I switch the power supply off and back on, the system starts by itself. The motherboard shows a yellow DRAM light, then a red CPU light, and shuts down after roughly five seconds. The case power button no longer seems to do anything until the PSU is power-cycled.

I have cleared the CMOS, removed the battery, reseated the components, and tested both memory sticks individually in different slots, but the behavior is unchanged. The system uses an ASUS ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi motherboard, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and Seasonic Focus GX-1000 power supply. What should I test next, and is the motherboard or CPU more likely to be damaged?

Start with a complete minimum-hardware test rather than assuming the CPU is dead. Disconnect the GPU, storage, USB devices, front-panel connectors, and all unnecessary accessories. Leave only the motherboard, CPU and cooler, one known-good RAM stick, and the PSU connected. Reseat the 24-pin motherboard cable, CPU power cable, and both ends of the PSU cables if applicable. You can also briefly short the two power-switch pins with a screwdriver to rule out a faulty case button. If the board behaves the same way outside the case, the motherboard, CPU, or power delivery needs to be tested with known-good parts.

The fact that it ran for several minutes does not prove every connection is fine; a marginal connection or a component failing as it warmed up could still explain it. Also inspect for a misplaced screw, debris, or anything contacting the underside of the board.

Try booting with no RAM installed, then power it down and test one stick in the board's recommended slot. The diagnostic behavior should change when memory is removed; if it never changes, that points more toward the board, CPU power, or processor path than a simple bad DIMM. Have the PSU tested too, even though it is a reputable model—PSUs can fail independently of the cleaning.

With no memory installed, the DRAM light stays on and the fans stop. Adding either stick brings back the DRAM light followed by the CPU light and shutdown. I have already reseated the main cables and will have the board and processor tested rather than replacing parts blindly.

Vacuuming inside a computer is generally discouraged because of static discharge, and spinning fans aggressively can potentially feed voltage back into fan circuitry. However, nobody can identify the failed part from that fact alone, and a vacuum does not automatically mean the motherboard was destroyed. The diagnostic LEDs only show where startup stopped; a DRAM or CPU light can also result from a power, firmware, socket, or motherboard problem.

The CPU is probably not the first part I would condemn. A repair shop can test the board with a compatible processor and memory, which is safer than buying replacement parts based only on the indicator lights.

Because this is a Ryzen X3D processor on a newer 800-series board, check the motherboard BIOS version and any manufacturer notices about CPU compatibility or firmware-related failures. If the system previously worked, a BIOS issue is less obvious, but the shop should still verify the firmware and inspect the CPU socket for bent or contaminated contacts. Do not repeatedly power-cycle it if there is any smell, visible damage, or unusual heat.
