I bought a Ryzen 5500X3D and am looking for an AM4 motherboard, possibly used. The board may need a BIOS update before it supports the 5500X3D. My roommate has a Ryzen 5 1600 that I could use for the update, but I'm concerned that a newer BIOS might remove first-generation Ryzen support. If that happens, would the motherboard be permanently bricked, or would it simply stop booting with the Ryzen 5 1600 installed? What's the safest way to handle this?

The main risk is interrupting the BIOS update or losing power while it’s being written, not losing CPU support. Confirm that the specific BIOS supports the 5500X3D, use a stable power source, and don’t shut the system down during the update. If possible, choose a board with BIOS Flashback so you can update without needing a supported CPU installed.
It won’t brick the motherboard. If the updated BIOS drops support for the Ryzen 5 1600, the system simply won’t POST while that CPU is installed. The board itself should still work normally with a supported processor, such as your 5500X3D.
A failed boot with an unsupported CPU is different from a failed BIOS flash. The 1600 may stop working after the update, just as the 5500X3D may not work before the update, but neither situation permanently damages the board.

The exact CPU support depends on the motherboard and BIOS version. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list before buying, especially if you’re considering an older 300-series board.
