My current gaming PC has an Intel Core i7-12700K, 64GB of DDR4-3600 memory, and an RTX 3080, connected to a 4K 120Hz TV. The CPU still seems capable, so I'm wondering whether it makes sense to keep the rest of the system for another few years. My main uncertainty is the graphics card: should I upgrade to a Radeon RX 9070 XT or spend nearly $1,000 more on an RTX 5080? Would the 5080 provide enough extra value at current prices, or should I simply keep the RTX 3080 and wait another year or two?

If you want an upgrade now, put the money into the graphics card rather than the CPU. The RX 9070 XT should be a substantial step up from the 3080 and is easier to justify than paying almost another thousand dollars for the RTX 5080. The 5080 makes more sense if you specifically want stronger 4K performance, ray tracing, or Nvidia features and are comfortable paying a premium.
I’d keep the whole system for now unless you’re unhappy with your current 4K experience. Your CPU and DDR4 setup are still well balanced, and upgrading the processor would offer relatively little benefit for 4K gaming. If you find a heavily discounted, trustworthy 13th- or 14th-generation CPU later, it could be a cheap drop-in upgrade, but there’s no need to plan around that today.
The 12700K is still a very capable gaming CPU, especially at 4K, where the GPU is usually the limiting part. I’d keep the processor, memory, and motherboard. If the RTX 3080 still delivers a frame rate you enjoy, there’s no urgent reason to replace it either. Waiting until performance actually starts bothering you may give you better options and pricing.
