I'm planning to replace my gaming laptop, which has an RTX 4060 and an i5-12500H, with a powerful desktop for 4K gaming. I mainly play single-player games, along with Gray Zone Warfare, Ready or Not, and Enshrouded. My target is 4K with ray tracing, and I may try path tracing, although it isn't essential. The RX 9070 XT is attractive because of its price, but I'm unsure whether it can handle demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with ray tracing without relying heavily on FSR and frame generation. The RTX 5080 costs more but seems much better suited to high-end ray tracing. I'd pair either card with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and 32GB of RAM. Is the RX 9070 XT capable enough for this use case, or is the RTX 5080 worth saving for?

For the games and settings you listed, I’d lean toward the 5080 if the budget allows it. At 1440p ultrawide, the 9070 XT would be a much easier recommendation, but 4K ray tracing places more demand on the GPU and its upscaling or frame-generation features.
The price difference matters a lot. The 9070 XT is usually the better value if you mostly care about rasterized performance and are willing to tune settings. The RTX 5080 makes more sense if you specifically want 4K ray tracing, better access to DLSS, and stronger path-tracing performance. A 5070 Ti is another middle-ground option, but the 5080 gives more headroom at 4K.
For 4K ray tracing, the RTX 5080 is the safer choice. It generally has stronger ray- and path-tracing performance, and DLSS tends to provide more consistent image quality and frame-generation support than relying on AMD’s features. The RX 9070 XT is excellent value for traditional rasterized gaming, but you’ll likely need to reduce settings or use more aggressive upscaling in demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077. If you can comfortably afford the 5080, it fits your target better.
The 9070 XT is more of a high-end 1440p or entry-level 4K card when heavy ray tracing is involved. It can run 4K games well with sensible settings, but modern titles using intensive RT or PT may require upscaling, frame generation, and reduced quality settings. The 5080 is better suited to 4K RT, although even that card may need upscaling and frame generation for path tracing in the most demanding games. Decide whether the extra cost is worth those specific features rather than expecting native 4K path tracing everywhere.

AMD’s newer FSR 4.1 support improves the situation for games using compatible versions of FSR, so the 9070 XT isn’t automatically a bad choice. The bigger gap is still ray tracing and especially path tracing performance.
