I replaced my 2.5-inch SATA SSD with an M.2 SATA drive of the same capacity, with Battlefield 6 as the only installed game, and the system feels noticeably faster and more responsive. Is there actually a meaningful performance difference between M.2 SATA and 2.5-inch SATA drives, or could something else explain the improvement?

If both drives really use SATA, their performance should be very similar. SATA III is limited to roughly 600 MB/s, and most SATA SSDs top out around 500–550 MB/s. An M.2 drive using the SATA interface usually does not have a major speed advantage over a 2.5-inch SATA SSD.
Check the exact model numbers of both drives. If the new drive is labeled NVMe or PCIe rather than SATA, that explains the noticeable improvement. If both are SATA models, the difference may come from the old drive being nearly full, worn, slower, or configured differently.
M.2 describes the physical form factor, not the speed. An M.2 drive can use SATA or PCIe/NVMe. If the replacement is actually an NVMe drive, then the higher bandwidth can definitely make it feel faster than a 2.5-inch SATA SSD.
There can be a small difference from factors like drive age, controller quality, free space, firmware, or background activity, but a genuine M.2 SATA versus 2.5-inch SATA upgrade should usually be modest—perhaps around a few percent rather than a dramatic change.
