Can I safely add my old SATA SSD to my new PC and recover my files?

I built a new PC a few months ago after the motherboard in my previous system failed. The new build already has an SSD, but I left the old SATA SSD disconnected. I now want to install it as extra storage and recover a Minecraft world I spent hundreds of hours creating. Can I simply connect the old SSD, start the computer, copy the world, and delete everything else, or could having two drives with operating systems cause problems?

Check the BIOS or UEFI boot order before starting up. With two bootable drives installed, set the new SSD as the first boot device. If the old drive contains files protected by an old user account or encryption, you may need the original login credentials or recovery key to access them.

When you eventually format it, be extremely careful to select the old SSD. If other external drives are connected, temporarily unplugging them can make it harder to choose the wrong disk.

The safest approach is to boot from the new drive, copy the files you want from the old SSD, and then reformat the old drive if you want to use it for storage. Reformatting removes the old operating-system and recovery partitions as well as the other files, so double-check that the Minecraft world and anything else important are backed up first.
