How can I add several hard drives to an older PC for a home server?

I inherited an older PC and several hard drives that I'd like to use for a basic home server. It has a Gigabyte GA-B75M-S motherboard with an LGA1155 socket, and two SSDs are already installed for the operating system and general storage. The power supply is a non-modular 500W unit, and I noticed at least one damaged-looking SATA power connection, possibly from a Molex-to-SATA adapter. What should I check before adding more drives, and what hardware would I need if I run out of SATA ports or power connectors?

You’ll need one SATA data cable and one suitable SATA power connection per drive. The two SSDs may already be using some of the motherboard’s ports, so check what is free rather than assuming there are no ports left. Take clear photos of the motherboard, power supply cables, and the damaged connector if you can; that will make it much easier to identify what can safely be reused.

Before buying parts, check whether the extra drives are 3.5-inch hard disks or 2.5-inch SSDs, test that each one is healthy, and confirm the power supply has enough separate connectors. For a home server, you’ll also want good airflow because several mechanical drives produce heat and vibration. The motherboard’s age is not automatically a problem, but an old unknown-brand PSU is the part I’d be most cautious about.

First count both kinds of connections: SATA data ports on the motherboard and SATA power plugs from the power supply. The GA-B75M-S should have several SATA ports, but the exact number depends on the board revision. If you run out of data ports, a PCIe SATA controller or HBA can add more. If you run out of power plugs, don’t keep chaining questionable adapters—especially with a damaged connector. A 500W rating may be enough for several hard drives, but the age and quality of the power supply matter just as much. Inspect the cables and connectors carefully, and replace the PSU if anything is melted, loose, or badly damaged.

A Molex-to-SATA adapter can work when it’s properly made, but cheap ones are a known fire risk. I’d replace the damaged adapter and use a reliable power supply before installing a whole group of drives.
