I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and need an AM5 motherboard priced around 200–350 CAD. I'm interested in tuning and overclocking features, and I'm currently considering the Asus TUF B850-Plus WiFi, MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi 2, and MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi. The X870E model is on sale for about 300 CAD, putting it in the same range as the other boards. Which one offers the best value, and are the additional features of the X870E worth choosing over a B850 board? I'd also like to know whether the Realtek ALC4080 crackling issue is still present after BIOS and firmware updates, and whether the differences between the first and second versions of the B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi justify the price increase. I'm open to other motherboard recommendations as well.

The comments don’t establish whether the ALC4080 crackling problem is fully resolved, nor whether the two B850 Tomahawk revisions have a meaningful performance difference. I’d compare the exact specifications, BIOS support, rear I/O, networking, and warranty for the particular prices available rather than assuming the newer or higher-tier chipset is automatically better.
The Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite WiFi 7 is another option worth checking. It was available for roughly 280 CAD and may offer a strong feature set for the price. I haven’t used that specific board, so it would be worth checking current BIOS feedback and reliability reviews before buying.
One important thing: the 7800X3D doesn’t support traditional CPU overclocking in the usual sense. It’s largely power- and voltage-limited, so motherboard overclocking features shouldn’t be the main deciding factor. You can still use features such as Precision Boost Overdrive and a curve optimizer offset to tune performance, temperatures, and power consumption.
Good to know—I wasn’t aware of that. So PBO and a curve optimizer offset are still available even though traditional overclocking isn’t?
