I found a 1TB hard drive that belonged to my dad in my mom's attic. She said it stopped working, but I'd like to test it and recover any files if possible. What's the safest way to connect it to a computer and check whether the drive is still usable without accidentally damaging or erasing the data?

After connecting it, check Disk Management in Windows. If the drive appears with a normal partition and drive letter, try opening it in File Explorer and copy the important files somewhere else immediately. If the files are valuable, avoid making changes to the drive and consider a professional recovery service.
The first step is to actually test whether the drive is detected. You can connect it to a desktop using the appropriate SATA data and power cables, or use a SATA-to-USB adapter or external enclosure. The type matters: some larger desktop drives need a separate power adapter, while smaller laptop drives may get enough power over USB.
If the drive appears as unallocated, asks to be initialized, or prompts you to format it, don’t accept those options if you want the old data. Those actions can make recovery more difficult. If the computer doesn’t detect the drive at all, or it clicks, beeps, spins down, or repeatedly disconnects, stop testing it rather than repeatedly powering it on.
My parents stored it away because they believed it wasn’t working, so I’m not sure whether it was ever tested properly.
