Both RAM kits fail MemTest86—should I suspect the motherboard or CPU?

My AM5 system was stable for months, but it recently started crashing in games. I'm using a Ryzen 7 9800X3D at stock settings with 105W Eco Mode, an ASUS B650E-I Gaming WiFi motherboard with an updated BIOS, and 64GB of G.SKILL Flare X5 DDR5-6000 CL28 memory (2×32GB, model F5-6000J2836G32GX2-FX5) running EXPO.

MemTest86 reported errors with the original kit installed. Testing the original sticks individually in the primary slot produced different results: one passed for about 10 hours, while the other failed after a couple of hours. I RMA'd the kit, but the replacement memory is also producing errors. I haven't finished testing the replacement sticks individually yet, and I don't have a spare AM5 system at home for swapping parts.

What is the best way to isolate whether the problem is the RAM, motherboard, CPU memory controller, BIOS configuration, or something else?

Test the replacement kit methodically before RMAing anything else: clear CMOS, use one stick at a time in the board’s primary DIMM slot, and let MemTest86 complete several passes. Then repeat with the other stick and, if possible, test the same stick in the other slot. If both replacement sticks fail individually at default settings, that points more toward the motherboard, CPU memory controller, socket contact, or a BIOS issue than two separate bad kits.

Since there’s an accessible AM5 workstation at work, testing one stick there should be especially useful. If the kit passes there at its rated settings, focus on the CPU, motherboard, socket, and BIOS in the original system.

Before blaming the CPU, inspect the AM5 socket and CPU seating carefully. A slightly bent socket pin, uneven cooler pressure, or poor contact can affect one memory channel and produce inconsistent errors. Reseat the CPU and cooler, check both DIMM slots for debris or contamination, and make sure the modules are fully latched. If the memory fails at conservative default settings in multiple slots, then motherboard or CPU replacement becomes reasonable; testing the board with a known-good AM5 CPU or testing your CPU in another board is the cleanest way to distinguish them.

First test everything at the motherboard’s default JEDEC settings, with EXPO completely disabled. DDR5-6000 CL28 is an overclocked memory profile, and stability depends on the CPU’s integrated memory controller as well as the board and DIMMs. Clear CMOS, load BIOS defaults, and run each stick separately in the recommended slot. If errors disappear at stock speed, the hardware may be fine but the EXPO settings need tuning. Don’t only change the CAS latency—loosening the full timing set or dropping the memory speed to 5600 or 5200 is a better test.

The exact kit is F5-6000J2836G32GX2-FX5. I tried changing only the CAS latency before, but I’ve since realized the other timings and voltage matter too. I’m going to test with EXPO off first, then try a slower profile if needed.
