I'm looking to upgrade from a GTX 1060 and found a used RX 6700 XT for about $290. Would it be a worthwhile upgrade for 1080p gaming, and how many more years should I expect it to handle new AAA games? Are there any better graphics cards available around the same budget?

At 1080p, the GPU should perform great, but don’t overlook your CPU and system memory. A weak processor or insufficient RAM can limit frame rates and cause stuttering, especially in newer open-world games. For lighter games, the card can even handle some 4K gaming, while 1440p is a more realistic target for demanding titles.
For a real-world example, the card remains perfectly usable at 1440p when settings and upscaling are chosen sensibly. Newer demanding games may run around 60–80 FPS with high settings and a quality upscaling mode, so 1080p should be comfortable for much longer. A similar RX 6750 XT is only roughly 10% faster, so it’s worth considering if the price difference is small.
Yes, it would be a major upgrade over the GTX 1060 and should handle 1080p gaming very well. It can also manage 1440p in many games, depending on the settings and the rest of your system. At $290 used, though, the value depends heavily on your local market, so compare it with other used cards before buying.
The 6700 XT is still a capable card, especially because its 12GB of VRAM gives it some breathing room in newer games. You should be able to keep playing AAA titles for quite a while, but over time you’ll probably need to lower settings, use upscaling, or avoid ultra-quality textures. It won’t suddenly stop running games; performance expectations will gradually come down.
If you can find a clean RTX 3080 Ti near the same used price, it would offer more raw performance, but it also uses considerably more power and may have less convenient VRAM capacity. Newer AMD cards could be better too, although they usually cost more. The 6700 XT makes the most sense if you want a straightforward, efficient upgrade without stretching your budget.

I’m seeing one for around $290. Are there any stronger cards I should look for at about that price?
