Should I Upgrade from an RTX 3090 to an RTX 5080 or 5090?

The choice mostly comes down to budget and how much performance you actually need. The 5080 should still be a strong upgrade from a 3090 and is the more comfortable option if connector reliability worries you. The 5090 is the faster card and has more VRAM, but it costs much more and carries more power-related concern. For maximum peace of mind, I’d personally choose the 5080 or run a 5090 with a conservative power limit rather than operating it continuously at full draw.

A 5090 doesn’t necessarily have to run at its maximum power limit. With an undervolt or sensible power limit, it can often use considerably less power while still delivering excellent 4K performance. That can reduce heat and connector stress, although it doesn’t remove the need for careful cable installation. The 5090 also offers substantially more performance and VRAM than the 5080, so it makes more sense if you play at 4K, use heavy mods, or run demanding productivity or AI workloads.

The connector issue appears to be less likely with the RTX 5080 because it draws less power, but the risk isn’t completely eliminated. Whichever card you choose, make sure the connector is fully inserted, don’t use unnecessary extensions or adapters, and avoid sharply bending the cable near the plug. Your 1500W power supply should provide plenty of capacity.

For AI or other VRAM-heavy work, be careful with the comparison: a 5080’s 16GB may be less useful than the 24GB on your current 3090. The 5090’s larger memory capacity is a more meaningful upgrade for those workloads, while gaming performance is where the 5080 is easier to justify as a straightforward upgrade.
