My PS5 disc drive has had problems before, including failing to detect when a disc was removed and continuing to run the eject mechanism. Now it scans discs at roughly 1 MB every few minutes and makes a loud buzzing or crackling sound, almost like a tiny electrical sparking noise. Because of this, it cannot install or download anything from the discs I try. I opened the console to check for anything obviously broken, but I'm not experienced with repairing disc drives. Is there anything safe I can troubleshoot, or does the drive likely need to be replaced or professionally repaired?

That combination of extremely slow reading, loud mechanical or electrical noise, and the earlier eject-detection problem points to a failing disc-drive assembly or its sensors. It probably isn’t a software issue. Avoid running discs repeatedly, since a damaged spindle, laser, or drive mechanism could scratch them. If you’re not familiar with console repair, reassemble it carefully and have the drive inspected or replaced by a qualified repair shop. Opening it further can also create alignment problems or damage the laser.
I only removed the outer screws and opened it to look for anything obvious, similar to cleaning it. I didn’t find anything visibly broken, but I’ll stop testing it until I can get the drive checked.
