I want to start learning Docker, but I have very little experience with Linux. Will that make learning Docker significantly harder? Should I learn Linux fundamentals first, or can I pick up the necessary knowledge while learning Docker?

The amount of Linux knowledge depends on what you want to do. Building and running simple images only requires familiarity with a shell and package managers. Understanding Docker more deeply involves concepts such as filesystems, mounts, chroot, and Linux namespaces.
You can start Docker without much Linux experience, especially with Docker Desktop on Windows or macOS. You’ll learn many of the required commands along the way, but Linux is generally the most natural environment for Docker and may make troubleshooting easier.
If your containers are based on distributions such as Debian or Alpine, knowing the commands and package tools used by those environments will help when you need to enter a container, install dependencies, or debug problems. Learning these basics alongside Docker is completely reasonable.
Basic command-line skills are usually enough at first: navigating directories, working with files, installing packages, using pipes, redirecting output, and searching text with tools like grep. You don’t need deep kernel expertise to get started.
Docker on Windows is still a valid way to learn, but it usually runs Linux containers through WSL2 or a lightweight virtual machine. That extra layer can use more resources and sometimes create file-sharing quirks, so learning on Linux directly can provide a smoother experience.
