I'm moving into my university dorm next week and need to transport my prebuilt PC setup on a 1.5–2 hour car ride. I've read that I should lay the case flat and remove the graphics card first, but I'm nervous about taking out the GPU for the first time. It's a fairly large 9070 XT, so I'd like to know whether there's a safer way to secure the computer without removing it, or what precautions I should take if removal is really the best option.

Removing the GPU is the safest choice, especially with a large, heavy card like a 9070 XT. Turn the PC off, unplug every power cable from the card, release the PCIe slot latch, remove the case screws, and pull the card straight out without twisting. Store it in an anti-static bag with padding, rather than letting it rattle around inside the case.
For a short drive, many people simply lay the PC flat, secure it with a seat belt, and drive carefully. Put the motherboard side facing upward so the graphics card isn’t hanging from the slot, and cushion the case with a blanket or towel to prevent it from sliding or taking hard impacts. This has worked fine for plenty of long-distance moves.
The main risk is the weight of the GPU flexing the slot or stressing the card during sudden movement. A smaller card may be fine left installed, but a long, heavy one is more vulnerable. If the PC still has its original internal shipping foam, use that; otherwise, external padding and careful positioning are preferable to stuffing loose material inside the case.
If you’re not comfortable removing it, you can probably transport the PC intact as long as it’s positioned correctly. Lay it flat with the motherboard facing up, keep the front and rear of the case aligned with the direction of the seat rather than sideways, and secure it so it can’t move. Avoid placing anything heavy on top and take corners, bumps, and braking gently.

The power cables are easy to overlook, so I’ll make sure they’re disconnected before touching the card.
