I'm using a B550 motherboard with a Ryzen 5 5600X and want more CPU performance, preferably without replacing the platform. Would a newer chip such as the Ryzen 5 9500 provide a meaningful upgrade, or would I need to move to an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory? I'm mainly interested in understanding the best upgrade options and whether an AM4 chip would make more sense.

The right choice also depends on your graphics card, games, resolution, and whether the system is for gaming or productivity. With a powerful GPU and a high-refresh-rate monitor, an X3D chip can help a lot; otherwise, the 5600X may still be adequate and a platform change might not be worth the cost.
For gaming, the worthwhile AM4 upgrades from a 5600X are the Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D. Their extra cores and 3D V-Cache can provide a noticeable improvement without changing your motherboard or memory. The 5800X3D is usually pricey, so the 5700X3D is often the better value.
The Ryzen 5 9500 is an AM5 processor, so it won’t work in a B550 board. Moving to it would require an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 RAM. If you want to stay on AM4, the 5700X3D or 5800X3D are effectively the end-of-line gaming upgrades.
