Which Component Should I Upgrade First?

My current PC has an Intel Core i5-4400 listed as the CPU, an RTX 5060 with 8GB of VRAM, 16GB of DDR5-6000 memory, and 1TB of storage. Which part should I upgrade first? I'm also wondering whether the CPU model might actually be an i5-14400, since the listed processor and DDR5 memory combination seem unusual.

If the processor is actually an i5-14400, meaningful CPU upgrades would be limited on that platform. A higher-end older-compatible chip such as a 12700 or a discounted 12600KF might make sense only if the price is very low and you can sell the current CPU; otherwise, save for a larger platform upgrade later.

Sixteen gigabytes of RAM is still usable, but moving to 32GB could help with newer games, multitasking, and heavy applications. Storage only needs upgrading if you’re running out of space or your current drive is unusually slow.

First, double-check the exact CPU model. An i5-4400 is a much older fourth-generation chip and would not normally be paired with DDR5, while an i5-14400 is a 14th-generation processor. The correct upgrade depends heavily on which one you actually have.

There isn’t enough information to choose confidently without knowing what feels slow and what you use the PC for. Check your CPU and GPU usage during the games or applications where you notice problems. Upgrade whichever component is consistently maxed out.

If it really is an i5-14400, the system is already fairly balanced for gaming with an RTX 5060. In most games, the graphics card will usually be the limiting part, so a CPU upgrade probably won’t make a major difference unless you’re targeting very high frame rates or using CPU-heavy applications.
