I'm deciding between an all-in-one liquid cooler and a standard tower-style air cooler. AIOs seem reasonably affordable and look cleaner to me, while large air coolers look like bulky blocks mounted directly on the CPU. I don't fully understand how AIO cooling works or why people choose it over air cooling. What are the practical differences in performance, noise, reliability, cost, and lifespan?

For most builds, a good air cooler is the better value. Models such as the Phantom Spirit are inexpensive, powerful, and often quieter than smaller liquid coolers. They also have fewer failure points: if the fan eventually fails, you can replace just the fan, and the heatsink itself can last for many years. The main drawbacks are clearance issues with tall RAM or smaller cases, plus a less streamlined appearance.
AIOs are mainly worth considering if you prefer the look, need extra clearance around the CPU socket, or are using a particularly hot processor and want the extra capacity of a larger radiator. They can look cleaner and sometimes run a little quieter, but they cost more and the pump can fail. Sealed units also slowly lose coolant over time, so a typical useful lifespan is often around five to seven years, though some last much longer. Leaks are uncommon but are another risk that air coolers avoid.
An AIO uses a pump to circulate coolant through a cold plate mounted on the CPU. The coolant absorbs heat, travels to a radiator, and radiator fans push air through the fins to release that heat. An air cooler transfers heat through metal heat pipes into a fin stack, where a fan moves the heat into the case air. With good case airflow, both work well for most CPUs. A 240mm AIO is often close to a good dual-tower air cooler, while a 360mm model can provide somewhat more cooling capacity.

There isn’t a universal rule that every air cooler lasts longer. I’ve personally had an air cooler’s heat pipe fail, while an AIO ran for more than a decade. Still, an air cooler is usually easier and cheaper to repair because replacing a fan is all that’s normally needed.
