How well do Nvidia GPUs work on Linux laptops today?

I installed Linux Mint on an older laptop and am considering switching my primary laptop to Linux as well. The main concern is that the newer laptop uses an Nvidia GPU. I've heard Nvidia hardware can be troublesome on Linux, but that may be outdated information. How reliable are Nvidia graphics cards today, especially on laptops, and is setup straightforward on Mint?

I’ve been using an Nvidia card on Linux without many problems. Driver versions can make a difference, though—one release may work better than another depending on the hardware. If you run into trouble, trying a different supported driver is often worthwhile.

That reputation is mostly outdated now. Nvidia GPUs generally work well on Linux as long as the appropriate proprietary driver is installed. On Mint, the built-in driver manager makes the setup fairly simple.

My Nvidia GPU works fine on Ubuntu, and I’ve also seen good results on other distributions. The exact GPU and laptop design matter more than the fact that it’s Nvidia. Hybrid-graphics laptops can require a little extra configuration for switching between integrated and dedicated graphics.

Laptop compatibility can depend heavily on how new the hardware is. Older systems are often easier, while very new GPUs, keyboards, or power-management features may need newer drivers or a newer distribution. Mint’s graphical installer is a safer starting point than manually partitioning and configuring everything.

Nvidia support is much better than it was a few years ago. Before installing, check the exact GPU model and whether your laptop uses hybrid graphics. Also make sure the distribution supports a suitable driver for that card.
