I recently replaced my GTX 1060 with an RTX 4060 Ti and expected a much larger improvement, but I'm still getting lower-than-expected FPS and severe drops. My system is fairly old, so I'm upgrading it gradually: i7-6700 CPU, ASRock H110M-ITX/ac motherboard, 16GB T-Force RAM, RTX 4060 Ti, an old 500W OCZ power supply, and a 500GB Samsung SSD. I mainly play CS2, Hell Let Loose, BeamNG, and Battlefield 6. Could the processor be holding the new graphics card back badly enough to make performance feel only slightly better than it did with the GTX 1060?

If you enjoy experimenting, there are unofficial modification methods sometimes used to run newer processors on older motherboards, but they require research and carry compatibility and stability risks. A proper motherboard, CPU, and RAM upgrade is the safer long-term solution. Also, that 500W power supply is extremely old, so replacing it with a modern, reputable unit would be wise before relying on the new graphics card.
Yes, the i7-6700 is a serious limitation for an RTX 4060 Ti, especially in CPU-heavy games like CS2, Hell Let Loose, and BeamNG. If your GPU usage is often well below 100% while one or more CPU cores are maxed out, the processor is keeping the graphics card waiting. That can absolutely cause stutters and make the upgrade feel much less impressive than expected.
The age of the platform is the main issue. The 4060 Ti is much faster than the 1060, but your CPU and older memory platform can prevent it from being used fully. Check GPU utilization, CPU core usage, temperatures, and frame-time graphs rather than looking only at average FPS. A CPU/platform upgrade should provide smoother frame rates and better minimum FPS.

My CPU usage reaches around 90–100% in basically every game and application, so that probably explains the drops. I just didn’t expect the difference from the 1060 to feel this small.
