Should I Upgrade from a 4080 Super to a 5090 Founders Edition at MSRP?

I have the chance to buy an RTX 5090 Founders Edition at its official retail price through a promotional event. I currently game on a 32-inch 4K monitor and already have an RTX 4080 Super, which handles most games at medium-to-high settings. The rest of my system is fairly high-end as well, so the 5090 would fit the build. Is passing on this opportunity foolish, or are there practical reasons I should avoid upgrading?

There is also an argument for keeping the 4080 Super. It is already a very capable 4K card, and future generations could offer better value or more VRAM. If you would be annoyed by a newer midrange card eventually matching the 5090, waiting is reasonable—but that is always a risk with PC hardware.

Since you are getting the opportunity at MSRP rather than paying an inflated market price, there is not much downside if your finances are comfortable. I would either install it and sell the 4080 Super, or leave the box sealed if you are genuinely unsure and decide later whether the upgrade is worth keeping.

If you can comfortably afford it and actually want the performance, buying it at MSRP makes sense. You could keep the 5090 and sell the 4080 Super, which would offset a significant portion of the upgrade cost. If you decide you do not need it, the card should also be relatively easy to resell.

I made a similar jump from a 4080-class card to a 5090 at MSRP and have been happy with it. The difference is most noticeable when pushing demanding games at 4K, using ray tracing, or aiming for higher frame rates. Whether it is worth it depends more on your budget and enthusiasm than on necessity.

The main things I would check are power requirements, case clearance, and the 12VHPWR connection. Make sure your power supply and cable setup are appropriate, and consider a quality cable or connector monitor as inexpensive insurance. Otherwise, a 5090 would be a substantial upgrade for high-refresh-rate 4K gaming.
