I'm planning a new PC mainly for 1440p gaming, streaming content, and heavy multitasking. I often leave dozens of windows and a very large number of browser tabs open, so I want a system that will stay responsive and remain useful for several years. Gaming is important, but I'm not building exclusively for it.
My current parts list is:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D
- Cooler: Montech HyperFlow Silent 360mm AIO
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B850M Eagle WiFi6E Ice
- Memory: 32GB DDR5-6000 CL28, although finding affordable RAM has been difficult
- Storage: Existing 1TB Samsung NVMe SSD and 1TB hard drive, plus a new 4TB NVMe SSD
- GPU: XFX Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB
- Case: Lian Li O11 Vision-M
- PSU: 850W ATX 3.1 Platinum unit
I can get several components for less than the listed prices, including a discounted 9900X3D. I'm considering it because it has more cores than the 9800X3D and I'd rather prioritize longevity and multitasking. I also prefer the 7900 XT because its 20GB of VRAM seems more future-proof than a 16GB graphics card. The 360mm AIO is mainly for appearance, and I already own the smaller drives. Is this a sensible build, or would you change the CPU, cooler, GPU, memory, or storage choices?

The GPU choice depends on your priorities. A newer 9070 XT may offer better performance and value than the 7900 XT in some markets, but it has 16GB of VRAM. If having 20GB is important for high-resolution textures, video work, or keeping the card longer, the 7900 XT is still a defensible choice. Just make sure you’re comparing your actual purchase prices rather than the inflated prices shown in the parts list. At the listed price, the older card would be difficult to justify.
For gaming, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is generally the stronger value and can deliver better gaming performance than the 9900X3D. The extra cores on the 9900X3D are useful for workloads that actively use them, but simply keeping lots of browser tabs open usually calls for more memory rather than a higher-end CPU. A 9800X3D should still handle streaming, media playback, multitasking, and 1440p gaming comfortably.
You also don’t need a 360mm liquid cooler for either processor. A good dual-tower air cooler, such as a Phantom Spirit-class cooler, should be sufficient and considerably cheaper. The AIO is reasonable if you mainly want the appearance, but it won’t provide much practical benefit here.
That makes sense. I’m mostly choosing the AIO for the look, and I’m leaning toward the 9800X3D now after comparing the gaming performance and price difference.
The storage setup isn’t automatically a problem since you already own the 1TB SSD and hard drive. Adding a 4TB NVMe drive makes sense if you regularly store large photo and video files, especially 2K or 4K footage. The hard drive can remain as secondary storage, although a 1TB 5400 RPM drive will be much slower than the SSDs and may not be worth replacing unless you need the space.
I’d be more cautious about the memory. 32GB is still workable for gaming and normal multitasking, but 64GB would be a more comfortable target for heavy browser use, streaming, and media applications. It’s better to use a stable 2x32GB DDR5-6000 kit than to chase extremely expensive low-latency memory. You can also start with 32GB and upgrade later if your actual usage shows that you’re running out.
I do use a lot of storage for photos and videos, so the 4TB SSD is intentional. I’m keeping the existing drives rather than replacing them, and I’ll probably begin with 32GB because 64GB is currently difficult to fit into the budget.

The 20GB of VRAM is the main reason I’m avoiding the 9070 XT. I previously had a 16GB card and would prefer having more headroom for the future, especially since I’m buying below the displayed list price.
