I deleted what seemed like useless files from my PC yesterday, and afterward some of my files started showing errors, missing thumbnails, or red X icons. Windows says the problem may be that my OneDrive storage is full. Most files still open, but loading has become very slow and I'm worried that I'll accidentally delete important programs, documents, or photos.
I'm confused about which files are actually stored on my PC, which are only in OneDrive, and which are just placeholders. I've also never been able to stop OneDrive from syncing without it repeatedly asking me to enable it again. Should I pause or disconnect syncing first? Is it safe to delete files through OneDrive, or could that remove the local copies from my computer? I want to free up space without losing anything important.

OneDrive is separate from your PC’s available hard-drive space, so having lots of free space on the computer doesn’t increase your cloud-storage limit. Sign in to OneDrive through a web browser and review what is actually stored there. You can reduce the folders being backed up or upgrade the storage, but first verify that anything important exists locally or in another backup.
Don’t delete everything yet. Pause OneDrive syncing and open its settings to see exactly which folders are being backed up. A file shown in File Explorer may only be an online placeholder rather than a full copy on your computer. Check that important files are marked as always available locally, or copy them to a separate non-OneDrive folder or external drive before making changes.
The safest order is: pause syncing, inspect the OneDrive folder and its online contents, make a backup of important documents and photos, then change the backup settings or delete selected cloud files. Deleting a synchronized file can delete it from both OneDrive and the PC, so treat those folders as connected until you’ve unlinked them or moved the files elsewhere.
If you decide to stop using OneDrive, unlink or uninstall it only after confirming that your important files are fully downloaded. Files with cloud or placeholder icons may disappear from the local folder when syncing is stopped because the computer never had the full file. After making a separate backup, you can remove OneDrive and manage the remaining cloud files online.
