I'm building my first PC in the UK with a strict budget of around £1,000, and I can't save up more money right now. I want to use the newest-generation graphics platform and DDR5 memory, but I can't afford both 32GB of system RAM and a graphics card with 16GB of VRAM. I've been searching for a suitable 16GB card for over a month without finding one that fits the budget. My main uses will be gaming and CAD/CFD work, probably using Fusion for CAD. I'm currently comfortable gaming at 1080p, though I might try 1440p if the graphics card can handle it. I also probably won't be able to upgrade the system for quite a while, so I'm trying to choose the option that will age better.

Since you won’t be able to upgrade for a while, don’t sacrifice system memory just to reach 16GB of VRAM. For 1080p gaming, a modern 8GB or 12GB card can still be reasonable depending on the games and settings, while 32GB of RAM gives you more headroom for games, CAD, and general multitasking. If possible, compare complete builds rather than choosing between memory specifications in isolation.
Prioritize 32GB of system RAM and choose a 12GB graphics card if you can. At 1080p, and even at 1440p with sensible settings, 12GB of VRAM is still capable for most games. Having only 16GB of system RAM can become a noticeable limitation in newer games and multitasking, especially with CAD or CFD software running.
Getting 32GB of DDR5 and a new 16GB graphics card within roughly £1,000 may not be realistic once you include the CPU, motherboard, storage, power supply, case, and cooling. If you can’t increase the budget, consider a used graphics card or a less expensive platform. A previous-generation system with 32GB of RAM and a stronger used GPU may provide better overall performance than forcing every part to be new.
The right choice depends on how demanding your CAD and CFD workloads are, since some programs benefit more from system RAM while others can use GPU memory. Your resolution and game settings matter too: 8GB can still work for many 1080p games, while newer AAA titles at 1440p may benefit from 12GB or more. Since you’re using Fusion and expect to stay at 1080p for now, 32GB of RAM seems like the safer baseline.

I’ll probably use Fusion for CAD, but I haven’t decided which CFD software I’ll use yet. I’m fine with 1080p, and the games I play now are fairly light because my current hardware limits me. I’d like to play more demanding games after building the PC, though probably not the latest AAA releases.
