My roughly four-year-old RTX 3080 has genuinely failed after serving me well. Before it died, I had also started noticing more frequent frame-rate dips in games such as Destiny 2 and GTA Online, even though those games had run better a couple of years ago. I'm looking for a replacement GPU with a budget of about £500, and that figure is an absolute maximum. Should I look at a newer Nvidia card, switch to AMD, consider used hardware, or try repairing the 3080 first?

Before replacing it, check whether the card is actually dead. Test temperatures, GPU usage, power connections, and the card in another system if possible. If it still shows symptoms, replacing thermal paste and the memory thermal pads might bring it back, although that won’t help if there’s a failed component.
If £500 really is the hard limit, I’d either wait for a sale on a 5070 or RX 7800 XT/7900 GRE, or buy a good used card. Saving for a 9070 XT would give you a clearer performance jump, but there’s no guarantee prices will be lower in a few months.
If you can stretch the budget, an RX 9070 XT is a much more substantial upgrade and has been available around £600–£650, though prices seem to be moving upward. AMD is worth considering unless you specifically need Nvidia features such as CUDA or prefer its ray-tracing and upscaling ecosystem.
For around £500, look for a discounted RTX 5070, RX 7800 XT, or RX 7900 GRE. Compare benchmarks for the games you actually play, since some new cards in this price range may not be a meaningful upgrade over a healthy RTX 3080. A used 3080 Ti could also offer strong performance if you’re comfortable buying second-hand.
A used RTX 3080 10GB has been a great value for me, so it could be one of the better choices if you can find one from a trustworthy seller.
Switching from Nvidia to AMD is generally straightforward for gaming. Just use a driver-cleanup utility when changing cards, then install the latest AMD drivers. The main differences are features, ray tracing, and upscaling rather than basic compatibility.
