I have an older Lenovo IdeaPad 5-15ITL05 (Type 82FG) that I'm planning to recycle. Windows shows an SSD as the C: drive, so I assume there isn't a separate hard disk. The laptop has a damaged screen, a noisy fan, and runs hot, but I mainly want to make sure old client files, pay stubs, and other personal data cannot be recovered. What is the simplest reliable way to completely erase the SSD before recycling it?

If Secure Erase isn’t available, use Windows’ reset option and choose “Remove everything,” then select the option to clean the drive rather than just remove your files. That’s adequate for many situations, especially if device encryption or BitLocker was enabled, though a manufacturer-provided SSD secure-erase tool is preferable for highly sensitive data.
If the drive is still usable, the best approach is to remove it and either keep it or connect it to another computer with a USB enclosure. Before recycling, check the laptop’s BIOS or UEFI settings for a feature called Secure Erase, SSD Erase, or a similar storage-security option. That uses the drive’s own erase function and is more thorough than simply deleting files. The exact menu location varies by Lenovo model.
For extremely sensitive information, you can remove the SSD and physically destroy it after erasing it. Don’t rely on smashing the laptop itself—the drive is a separate small circuit board, and it needs to be damaged directly. Physical destruction is usually unnecessary for ordinary recycling, but it’s the strongest option if recovery must be made impractical.
The laptop’s physical problems don’t necessarily mean the SSD is damaged. If it still boots and doesn’t show drive errors, the SSD may be perfectly fine; you can check its health with a drive-monitoring utility after removing it.
