I'm planning a new PC and am deciding between the Ryzen 9 7900X on AM5 and the Core Ultra 7 270K on LGA 1851. The Intel option costs roughly $40–$60 more. I mainly play games at 1440p on ultra settings with an RTX 3080 Ti, but around 2027 I'd also like to use the system for Blender and programming. Since I haven't purchased either motherboard platform yet, which CPU would be the better choice for performance and long-term value?

The 7900X may not be as fast right now, but AM5 is the more attractive platform for future upgrades. If you might replace the processor in a few years, you have a better chance of installing a newer Ryzen chip without changing the motherboard. Just make sure you choose a solid board and don’t treat rumored future CPUs as guaranteed.
The Core Ultra 7 270K is generally the faster option in both current games and productivity applications, including workloads like Blender. If you want the best performance immediately and don’t expect to replace the CPU while keeping the motherboard, the extra $40–$60 is reasonable.
For a mixed gaming and productivity build, either one will work well with your 3080 Ti. At 1440p ultra, the GPU will often be the limiting factor in games, so the practical difference may be smaller than benchmark charts suggest. Choose the 270K if you want higher performance right away; choose the 7900X if platform longevity and a later CPU upgrade are important. It may also be worth waiting if your build isn’t urgent, since newer processors could change the value comparison.
That upgrade path is useful only if you actually replace CPUs fairly often. If you usually keep a system for five or more years, the newer Intel platform’s stronger performance today may matter more than a possible future upgrade.
