Should I upgrade my current AM4 PC or build a new system for 1440p gaming?

My current PC has a Ryzen 5 2600, Radeon RX 580, and 16GB of DDR4 memory. It is starting to feel outdated, and I would like to play games such as Marvel Rivals, Counter-Strike, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege, and GTA smoothly at 1440p. I usually do not play the most demanding games.

I have seen several prebuilt systems priced around $1,100–$1,300, but they use DDR4. I am not worried about DDR4 performance right now; I mainly want to avoid buying something that will make future upgrades difficult. Building a new PC seems expensive for my budget, although I live near a Micro Center and can take advantage of its bundles and deals.

My current motherboard is an ASUS Prime B450-Plus, and my power supply is a 600W Bronze-rated unit. Would it make more sense to upgrade my existing AM4 system, or should I replace it with a newer platform?

DDR4 itself is not a problem for your current system because the Ryzen 5 2600 and B450 motherboard use it. For the games you listed, a Ryzen 5000 X3D chip, 32GB of RAM, and a newer GPU should be enough for a smooth 1440p experience for several more years. Just verify the power requirements, case clearance, and BIOS version before installing the new parts.

For 1440p, the graphics card is likely the biggest limitation right now. You could keep the motherboard and memory, upgrade to a Ryzen 5000 processor, and spend most of the budget on the GPU. That gives you much better value than replacing the entire system. A newer AM5 bundle is worth considering only if you specifically want a longer upgrade path and are comfortable spending more on the motherboard and DDR5 memory.

That makes sense. My motherboard is a Prime B450-Plus, and I was hoping to stay somewhere around $1,100–$1,300. I may compare the cost of a CPU and GPU upgrade against an AM5 bundle.

You probably do not need a completely new PC yet. Since your B450 board uses AM4 and already supports DDR4, a drop-in Ryzen 5000 upgrade could give you a big gaming improvement. A Ryzen 5 5600X3D from Micro Center, if available, would be especially strong for the money. Pair that with a modern GPU, and consider moving to 32GB of RAM. Check your board's BIOS support before buying, and make sure your 600W power supply has enough capacity for the graphics card you choose.
