Why does my HP All-in-One slow down so much when running Discord and a game?

I have an HP All-in-One 22-df0xxx with 8 GB of RAM, although Windows reports about 5.92 GB as usable. It has roughly 932 GB of storage with more than half free, and I barely have any games installed. Despite that, performance drops badly when I'm in a Discord call while playing a game. Loading becomes extremely slow and the computer gets very loud, as if it's overheating. The game in question is Pokémon Black 2 running through the DeSmuME emulator. What can I do to improve performance?

Free storage space and installed game count don’t determine how fast the computer can run several demanding tasks at once. Eight gigabytes of RAM is usable for light gaming, but a low-powered CPU can still struggle with an emulator and a voice call. If the system has a hard disk drive, replacing it with an SSD would noticeably improve Windows and application loading, although it won’t fully solve a processor that is already maxed out.

The main limitation is probably the processor rather than the amount of storage or RAM. These all-in-one models often have a low-end dual-core CPU, and running an emulator, Discord, and the game simultaneously can use most of its capacity. Close unnecessary programs and browser tabs, reduce Discord’s background features such as hardware acceleration or the overlay, and lower any emulator settings that aren’t needed. Also check whether the computer uses a mechanical hard drive or an SSD, since an older hard drive can make loading feel much worse.

That makes sense. I’ll check the processor and try turning off Discord’s overlay and other background apps.

Check Windows startup programs and disable anything you don’t need launching automatically, leaving security software enabled. While the slowdown is happening, open Task Manager and look at CPU, memory, disk, and GPU usage. If CPU usage is near 100%, the processor is the bottleneck; if disk usage stays at 100%, the storage drive may be the problem. Make sure the vents are clear and the fans aren’t clogged with dust, since excessive heat can cause the system to reduce its speed.
