I'm putting together a new gaming PC and am having a harder time choosing a CPU cooler than expected. The processor I'm considering doesn't seem especially demanding, and benchmarks suggest that a quality dual-tower air cooler would keep it well within safe temperatures. However, I really prefer the cleaner look of a 360mm AIO and don't mind spending extra for it. I won't be doing serious overclocking, though, and long-term reliability matters to me. The possibility of a pump eventually failing is my main concern. For anyone who has used both, is there a meaningful difference in temperatures or noise with a 360mm AIO, or is this essentially a cosmetic choice when the air cooler is already sufficient?

A 360mm model makes the most sense for unusually power-hungry processors running sustained all-core workloads, or when you specifically want to move CPU heat directly out through a top-mounted radiator. For a typical gaming CPU without aggressive overclocking, a strong air cooler is usually enough. If you love the cleaner look and the extra cost fits your budget, buying the AIO isn't wrong—it's just mostly an aesthetic and preference-based purchase.
Noise is where a 360mm radiator can sometimes help. Its larger surface area and multiple fans may allow lower fan speeds under sustained load, and the liquid also smooths out short temperature spikes. However, the pump creates its own constant hum, and fan quality and tuning matter a lot. During gaming, the GPU may be louder than either CPU cooler anyway, so the difference isn't guaranteed.
For the CPU you described, a good dual-tower cooler will probably be all you need. A 360mm AIO can offer a few degrees of extra thermal headroom, but that usually won't affect performance if both solutions keep the processor below its limits. In that situation, appearance is a perfectly valid reason to choose the AIO—just don't expect a dramatic functional upgrade.
That was my experience too. I tested a 360mm AIO and a Peerless Assassin on the same processor, and temperatures were nearly identical during long workloads. I ended up keeping the air cooler.
Air cooling is the better choice if your priorities are simplicity, reliability, and forgetting about the cooler for years. There is no pump to fail, no liquid to leak, and a replacement fan can usually refresh the cooler later. An AIO is still reasonable if you prefer the appearance, need better access around the CPU socket, have limited cooler-height clearance, or regularly transport the computer.
The transport advantage is worth mentioning. A large tower cooler puts more leverage on the motherboard, while an AIO's heavier radiator is attached to the case. You still need to mount either option properly, but the AIO can be less awkward to move.

Exactly. Some people find the pump noise more annoying than air-cooler fans. A well-tuned air cooler can be almost silent at idle because its fans can stop completely.
