My gaming PC is roughly eight years old, and I'm very out of date on current hardware. I'd like to start gaming again this year, but I can't afford to replace the entire system at once. My long-term goal is a capable 1440p high-refresh-rate machine that can also handle Adobe Creative Suite, photo processing, basic music production with plugins, and heavy multitasking across multiple monitors. I prefer a simple, well-ventilated case without RGB, and I'd like the final build to remain upgradeable for several years. There isn't a strict budget for the eventual build, but I'd like the first phase to stay around $1,000–$1,500, with less being preferable. I'm interested in a roadmap involving two or three upgrade phases. Ideally, the first upgrade would let me play newer games at high frame rates, even if I need to reduce some graphics settings. I'm considering replacing the motherboard, graphics card, and faulty CPU cooler first, possibly with a 12–16 GB GPU. NVIDIA's DLSS and Adobe support are appealing, though I'm also open to AMD. Which parts can I safely keep initially, what should I replace first, and what would be a sensible upgrade plan?

The existing parts can probably be reused for a short-term upgrade, including the case, storage, and possibly the power supply, but the exact recommendation depends on the current CPU, motherboard, RAM, and PSU model. A modern graphics card will give the biggest immediate gaming improvement. However, an eight-year-old platform may hold back minimum frame rates and multitasking performance, so treat that as a temporary step rather than the final solution. If the liquid cooler is failing, replace it with a reliable air cooler or a compatible inexpensive AIO rather than buying an expensive cooler now.
A practical sequence would be: first, replace the graphics card and any defective cooler; second, upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 memory together; third, replace the aging power supply if it is several years old or lacks modern GPU connectors, then add more storage or memory as needed. A 16 GB card such as an RX 9070 XT offers excellent 1440p performance, while an NVIDIA card may be preferable if you rely heavily on CUDA, ray tracing, or DLSS in your applications. Don’t assume a 750 W older PSU is safe just because its wattage is technically sufficient—check its age, condition, connectors, and quality. An 850 W modern Gold-rated unit is a sensible eventual replacement. You can undervolt a power-hungry GPU temporarily, but replacing an old PSU is safer than relying on that as a permanent plan.
For the long-term build, moving to an AM5 platform makes sense. A Ryzen 5 9600X is already very strong for gaming, while a Ryzen 9 9900X is a better fit if Adobe work, music production, and heavy multitasking are important. Pair it with a reasonably priced B850 or B650 motherboard and 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory; 64 GB would be worthwhile later for creative work. Make sure you compare current memory prices, because the unusually high memory price in that parts list is not representative of a sensible purchase.

That makes sense. I’d rather start with a platform that can accept a faster CPU later than spend heavily on a dead-end upgrade.
