I'm building my first PC and am having trouble figuring out which monitor specifications actually matter. I plan to use an RX 9070 and target 1440p gaming at the highest frame rate each game can manage, generally with high graphics and texture settings. I expect to use upscaling only when performance starts approaching roughly 60 FPS, although I'd be satisfied with 60 FPS if necessary.

I'm leaning toward IPS or VA rather than OLED so I can learn what suits me before spending more on a premium display. I'm especially confused about brightness, FreeSync tiers, and HDR. How many nits are generally enough for a normal room? Is FreeSync Premium or Premium Pro worth prioritizing over basic FreeSync? What do HDR10, HDR400, HDR600, and True Black ratings actually mean, and which ones provide a worthwhile improvement for gaming? Don’t feel obligated to buy a monitor with HDR just because the listing includes an HDR badge. For genuinely impressive HDR on an LCD, look for a tested Mini-LED or full-array local-dimming model with strong peak brightness, preferably around HDR1000-class performance. HDR600 can be worthwhile on a good implementation, but the certification alone doesn’t guarantee a good experience.

Local dimming can also be annoying on the desktop because it may cause blooming or brightness changes, so many people leave it disabled for normal use and enable it for HDR games or video. If HDR is not a priority, a quality 1440p high-refresh IPS monitor with good SDR performance is often the better first purchase.

For a typical room, around 300–400 nits is usually sufficient, and many people will run the monitor below its maximum brightness anyway. If your room gets direct sunlight, look for something brighter. Brightness is much more important when evaluating HDR than it is for ordinary SDR use.

FreeSync Premium is a nice feature because it generally includes low-framerate compensation, but it probably shouldn’t be the deciding factor with an AMD GPU. Basic Adaptive-Sync can already work well, so check the actual variable-refresh range in a review rather than relying only on the label. Premium Pro mainly adds features related to HDR and latency.

HDR10 is an HDR format, while HDR400, HDR600, and HDR1000 describe display performance levels. A monitor can advertise HDR10 without producing convincing HDR. On IPS or VA panels, good HDR normally requires local dimming, high peak brightness, and enough dimming zones; inexpensive HDR400 displays often look little different from SDR and can sometimes look worse.
