Is an RTX 5050 worth it for a budget gaming and CAD PC?

A friend in the UK is planning his first proper gaming PC after moving on from an Xbox. His most demanding games would likely be Sea of Thieves and Jedi: Fallen Order, alongside some CAD and 3D modelling work for university. He is happy with 1080p or 1440p and has a maximum budget of roughly £1,400–£1,500. Brand names are not important to him, and he has never built or owned a gaming PC before. How much should an RTX 5050 system cost at most, what would be the best alternative if he spent the full budget, and would a prebuilt or first-time self-build make more sense?

If the budget can stretch slightly beyond £1,500, a Ryzen 5 7500F paired with an RX 9070 XT is another strong option. A complete example was about £1,540, though the exact total will depend on current UK component prices. For a first-time builder, a prebuilt is easier and gives one point of support, but building yourself offers better value if you are comfortable following instructions and checking compatibility.

With a budget around £1,500, a sensible target is a Ryzen 5 9600X, 32GB of memory, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and an RX 9070. A parts list like that can come in around £1,460, leaving a balanced system with considerably more gaming and creative-work performance than an RTX 5050 build.
