I'm fairly new to gaming PCs and have owned this system for about four years, upgrading several components along the way. Downloads are unusually slow, and the PC struggles badly when I try to play games at high graphics settings. My current hardware includes an ASRock B450M Pro4 R2.0 motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 5500 processor, ASUS GeForce RTX 3060 8GB graphics card, 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 memory, and a 700W Thermaltake Smart 80+ power supply. My storage includes an Apple HDD and a Team T253A 512GB drive. What should I check or upgrade first, and are there any useful programs for diagnosing or improving performance?

The Ryzen 5 5500 and RTX 3060 should run many games reasonably well, although the 3060 may need reduced settings in newer demanding titles. Running games from an HDD can cause long loading times, hitching, and texture-streaming problems. Installing Windows and your games on a healthy SSD or NVMe drive would be one of the most worthwhile upgrades. Also check that the system drive has free space and that unnecessary startup programs are disabled.
For gaming, make sure your monitor cable is connected to the RTX 3060 rather than the motherboard’s video output. Also update the NVIDIA graphics driver and monitor temperatures and usage with a tool such as MSI Afterburner. If the GPU or CPU is overheating, it may throttle and cause major slowdowns.
The slow downloads and poor game performance may be separate problems. Download speed is usually determined by your internet plan, router, Wi-Fi signal, Ethernet connection, network adapter, or ISP—not by the graphics card. Try Ethernet if possible, check that your network drivers are current, and compare your results with a reliable speed test. A faulty adapter is possible, but it’s less common.
Before replacing more hardware, check the basics: back up important files, inspect the power and display cables, confirm the RAM is detected correctly, and scan for malware or unwanted software with Windows Security. If the system has accumulated years of problems, a clean Windows installation can help, but update the BIOS and save your files first. The power supply is sufficient on paper, though the Thermaltake Smart line is fairly basic.

The motherboard’s built-in Ethernet should normally handle around gigabit speeds, so upgrading the board probably won’t help unless your internet service is faster than that or the adapter is malfunctioning.
