What should I consider when building a new PC for Linux?

I've used Windows for years, so hardware compatibility was never something I had to think much about. I'm planning a new PC and would like to switch to Linux, probably Linux Mint, although I haven't chosen a distribution for certain yet. Are there components that don't work well or work especially well with Linux? Do I need to verify driver support for every part, and if so, what's the best way to check? I already have an RTX 3080—can I reuse it in the new build?

Your 3080 should be perfectly serviceable if you already own it, so there’s no urgent need to replace it just for Linux. If you’re buying a new GPU and want the least setup hassle, AMD is usually the safer choice. NVIDIA can work well once configured, but driver updates and display setups can occasionally require extra tinkering.

The less obvious compatibility problems are usually peripherals and manufacturer utilities rather than core PC parts. RGB controllers, fan software, keyboard macro tools, and mouse configuration apps may not have full Linux support. Hardware-stored profiles are a good workaround for things like macros, since you can configure them once on another system and then use the device normally in Linux.

Most standard PC components should work fine, including the motherboard and chipset. The main hardware choice to think about is the graphics card. AMD generally provides the smoother Linux experience because its drivers are built into the kernel and Mesa, while NVIDIA cards usually require installing the proprietary driver. Mint provides a driver manager, and some distributions offer the NVIDIA driver during installation. Your RTX 3080 is usable, but you may need to troubleshoot driver installation or multi-monitor issues.
