I'm building a PC for a friend and want to make sure I choose reliable parts. The system will use a Ryzen 5 9600X, 32GB of memory, and is aimed at gaming at 1440p. What AM5 motherboard would you recommend? I'm especially interested in good value, useful features, Wi-Fi availability, and whether it makes sense to spend extra for a future CPU upgrade.

You don’t need an expensive motherboard for a 9600X. A reasonably priced B650 board should handle it easily, and motherboard choice won’t meaningfully change performance. Avoid the very low-end chipsets if you want better connectivity and upgrade options. If you might move to a higher-end CPU later, choose a board with stronger-than-entry-level VRMs. Built-in Wi-Fi is worth considering if the PC won’t always use Ethernet, and a motherboard bundle can sometimes offer the best price.
There are plenty of boards under $150, but I’d compare the exact model rather than choosing strictly by brand. Check the rear I/O, number of M.2 slots, memory support, Wi-Fi, BIOS update features, and VRM reviews. Some buyers have concerns about certain manufacturers’ recent reliability and troubleshooting features, while others report no issues at all, so model-specific reviews are more useful than blanket brand recommendations.
For a gaming build, an X3D processor would be faster in some games, but the 9600X can make more sense when budget matters. If you’re buying a 9600X at a much lower price, putting the savings toward the graphics card may be the better choice for 1440p gaming.
Gigabyte’s B650 Eagle or Elite-style boards are worth looking at. The B650 Elite AX models in particular offer a solid mix of features, power delivery, and Wi-Fi without going overboard on price.
The MSI X870-P Max WiFi is a good-value option if you can spend around $170. If you’re trying to keep costs down, a B650 board around $100 should be perfectly suitable for this build.
I’ve had an ASUS B650E-M board running memory at 6000 MT/s with a high-end Ryzen processor without any problems. Brand reputation is worth considering, but individual board quality and features matter more than assuming every board from a manufacturer is bad.
