How can I protect my data while getting my laptop chassis repaired?

I'm planning to have my laptop chassis repaired, but I'm concerned about someone accessing the data on the hard drive while the laptop is in the shop. I know most technicians are trustworthy and are just doing their jobs, but I'd still like to take reasonable precautions. Would enabling BitLocker be enough, or should I remove the drive before handing over the laptop? I'm also worried about damaging the computer if I try to remove it myself, and I want to know whether doing so could affect a warranty.

BitLocker is still a good precaution, but make sure it’s fully enabled and that you have the recovery key saved somewhere safe. Encryption protects the data when the drive is powered off, but a technician could potentially access your files if the laptop is already unlocked or you give them your Windows password.

So if possible, removing the drive is the strongest option, while BitLocker is useful protection if the drive has to stay installed.

If the repair only involves the chassis, the safest option is to remove the storage drive and keep it with you. That completely prevents the shop from accessing your files. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, ask the technician to remove the drive and return it to you while they work.

Most repair shops should be fine with that request, especially if you explain that it’s for privacy rather than a lack of trust.

Before opening the laptop or removing anything, check the warranty terms. Some warranty repairs may require the original configuration, and opening the case could affect coverage depending on the manufacturer. You can also ask the repair shop whether they can remove and store the drive during the repair.
