What’s the best way to remotely access a Windows laptop in another country?

I need to remotely access a Windows laptop located in another country. A relative will be physically near the laptop and can turn it on, install software, and approve any setup steps. Both computers are running Windows. What remote-access software would be easiest and most reliable for this situation?

TeamViewer is usually the simplest option for this. Have your relative install it, then use the displayed connection details or set up unattended access if you’ll need to connect regularly. The free version may have usage or device limits.

Windows Quick Assist is worth trying first, especially if both systems are running Windows 10 or 11. It’s built in and straightforward, but the person at the remote computer generally needs to approve each session, so it’s less convenient for unattended access.

It works quite well for occasional support, but I’d choose a dedicated remote-access tool if you need to connect often without someone present.

AnyDesk and RustDesk are also good alternatives. RustDesk is free and open source, while AnyDesk is generally simple to set up. Windows Remote Desktop can work too, but it usually requires a Professional, Education, or Enterprise edition and additional network configuration such as VPN or port forwarding; it isn’t normally the easiest choice across separate home networks.

Chrome Remote Desktop is another easy cross-country option. It’s free and can be configured for unattended access with a PIN, provided the remote computer stays powered on and connected to the internet.
