I'm considering installing Linux on my Lenovo Yoga 7 and want to know what to expect. Will the trackpad, keyboard, speakers, Wi-Fi, and other basic hardware work out of the box, or should I expect to search for and install extra drivers? The laptop has a folding hinge, but it does not have a touchscreen.

For a first installation, Linux Mint with Cinnamon is approachable, while Fedora is a good choice if you want newer software. Whichever you choose, test from USB first and keep a backup of your important files before installing.

Most hardware drivers are included in the Linux kernel, so you usually do not download separate drivers for ordinary components. The main exceptions are newer hardware and dedicated graphics, especially NVIDIA hybrid graphics. If your laptop has an NVIDIA GPU, you may need to install the recommended package from your distribution’s software tools.

The safest approach is to search for your exact Yoga 7 model number together with Linux, since small hardware differences can affect compatibility. Even better, create a bootable USB with a distro such as Fedora, Mint, or Kubuntu and use its live environment before installing. You can test the keyboard, trackpad, audio, wireless connection, suspend, and display without changing your existing system.

Linux generally handles the basics very well, including the keyboard, trackpad, speakers, and display. The exact Yoga 7 model matters, though, because Lenovo has released many versions with different internal hardware. Folding-hinge features may need extra configuration, but a non-touch model avoids some of the usual touchscreen and tablet-mode complications.

Mine doesn’t have a touchscreen, although it does have the folding hinge. I’ll check whether that feature needs any special setup.
