I bought a character-shaped flash drive, but its connector doesn't fit into a standard USB port and the plug looks unusual compared with normal USB drives. Is it defective or a different kind of connector? I can still return it if necessary, but I'd like to know whether it's usable before sending it back.

Return it. A properly made USB drive should slide into the port easily and have the usual flat metal connector with visible contact pins. If the plug is shaped differently or won’t align, it may be defective or incorrectly assembled.
That doesn’t appear to be a standard USB flash drive connector. The metal tabs and internal contact layout look wrong for a normal USB port, so don’t force it in or try cutting parts off. It’s safest to return it for a replacement.
That’s disappointing because the character design is really cute, but I’ll return it rather than risk damaging the port or the drive.
