Will resetting Windows erase my other storage drives?

My PC is stuck in a blue-screen boot loop with a "System Thread Exception Not Handled" error. Automatic repair fails and only takes me to the advanced recovery options, so I'm considering resetting or reinstalling Windows. Will the reset affect every installed drive, or only the drive containing Windows? Should I disconnect my other storage drives first to protect them?

A reset should only affect the Windows drive and options you specifically select, but disconnecting any other physical drives is the safest approach. Leave only the system drive connected during the reset or clean installation so there’s no chance of selecting or overwriting the wrong disk. Back up anything important first, and make sure you have recovery keys available if BitLocker is enabled.

If the drive is a separate physical disk, unplugging it is straightforward protection. If it’s only another partition on the same physical disk, disconnecting it isn’t possible, so be especially careful to select the correct Windows partition. The reset or installer will not automatically protect every partition just because it contains personal data.

That stop message can be caused by a driver, corrupted system files, or faulty RAM or storage, so reinstalling may not be the best first step unless you need the quickest way back into Windows. From Advanced options, try System Restore, uninstalling a recent update, or Safe Mode. You may also be able to find more details in the crash dump files under C:WindowsMinidump if Windows or Safe Mode starts.

The built-in reset can sometimes fail or leave the underlying problem unresolved. If you decide to reinstall, a clean installation from Windows installation media is generally more reliable. Disconnect the data drives beforehand, then reconnect them after Windows is working.
