If the disk ever appears in Disk Management as RAW, unallocated, or without a recognizable file system, don’t format it, initialize it, or run repair tools. Those actions can overwrite information needed for recovery. Stop using it and consider professional recovery, especially if the data is irreplaceable. The normal spinning sound is encouraging, but it doesn’t prove the drive is healthy.
Before opening anything, confirm that the drive is getting enough power. Some larger external drives require their own power adapter, and not every USB port or cable provides the same power. Try the original power supply, another compatible powered port, and a known-good cable. Since it doesn’t appear in Disk Management at all, this is more likely a power, enclosure, USB interface, or hardware problem than a missing drive letter.
The USB enclosure may have failed even though the actual disk is still spinning. If you’re comfortable opening the enclosure, you can remove the drive and test it with a compatible SATA-to-USB adapter or by connecting it directly inside a desktop. Be careful, though: some external drives use specialized enclosure hardware or encryption, so the bare drive may not be readable normally.
