I currently have an RTX 4060 Ti 8GB in a prebuilt PC. I had planned to upgrade to an RX 9070 XT sometime next year, since RTX 5070 Ti prices became too high. However, I found an open-box RTX 5070 at Walmart for $450. The card was around $600 new a few weeks ago and now appears to be closer to $770. Assuming the card works properly, would passing up this deal be a mistake? Would the 5070 provide enough of an upgrade over my 4060 Ti to justify buying it now, even if I eventually upgrade again?

As long as the open-box unit has a warranty or a reasonable return window, I’d grab it. Even if you later decide it isn’t enough, you may be able to resell it for close to what you paid while GPU prices remain elevated.
The 5070 should be a noticeable step up from an 8GB 4060 Ti, particularly at higher settings. For reference, one user reports roughly 85–105 FPS in Forza Horizon 6 at extreme or ultra settings with medium ray tracing, DLSS Quality, and a 120Hz VRR display.
At $450, I’d seriously consider buying it. That’s a strong price for a 5070, especially if you can test it and confirm the return policy. You could use it now and sell it later when you move to a faster card.
Normally I’d say to wait, but $450 changes the situation. It’s a very good deal compared with current GPU pricing, and you’re unlikely to feel bad about buying it if the card is fully functional.
That was my thinking too. At that price, I’d even be tempted to buy it as a temporary card before a future upgrade.
