Be careful not to assume a job at Microsoft will mainly involve hands-on infrastructure engineering. Outside the United States, many technical Microsoft positions are part of the customer-facing field organization. Cloud Solution Architects and Solution Engineers often work with customers, partners, and account teams to understand requirements, recommend solutions, and demonstrate Microsoft technologies.
These roles can involve architecture and technical problem-solving, but usually less production software engineering. You may spend significant time on workshops, presentations, proof-of-concepts, demos, and acting as a technical advisor. Customer travel and occasional long days around major engagements are possible, although teams generally offer a good amount of autonomy.
Compensation depends heavily on the country, role, and seniority. Packages commonly combine base salary with bonuses and, in some cases, stock that vests over several years. Work-life balance varies by team, customer portfolio, and busy periods. Someone coming from infrastructure or DevOps can transition well into this kind of role, particularly if they enjoy explaining technology and working directly with customers.
Don’t focus only on Microsoft, AWS, or another major cloud provider as an employer. The larger opportunity is often with consultancies and ordinary companies that have adopted Azure. Most large European businesses use Azure in some capacity, and many infrastructure skills are portable between platforms.
Learn the fundamentals rather than only memorizing Azure services: networking, identity, Linux, Kubernetes, CI/CD, monitoring, security, and infrastructure as code. Terraform is particularly useful. Certifications can help you get past screening, but practical projects and the ability to design and operate reliable systems will matter more in interviews and on the job.
In the Netherlands, Azure is deeply embedded in many organizations, so it’s a fairly safe platform choice. However, most Azure jobs aren’t at Microsoft itself; they’re at consultancies or companies running their own infrastructure on Azure. Consulting can be an excellent route toward freelancing because you work with different environments, solve varied problems, and build a professional network.
AZ-900 is a reasonable introduction, but it usually doesn’t carry much weight on a technical résumé.
