I'm trying to understand the performance equivalent of an Intel Core i7-14700KF in Intel's newer Core Ultra lineup. Which Core Ultra processor is the closest match, especially for gaming and general desktop workloads?

The Core Ultra 7 265K is the closest architectural equivalent to the 14700KF. In actual performance, though, the Core Ultra 7 250K Plus and especially the 270K Plus can be faster. The 265K has issues involving its D2D and NGU components that can affect gaming performance, while the 270K Plus addresses those weaknesses and also adds four cores.
For gaming, the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus is probably the most comparable choice in practice and may be faster than the 14700KF. The 265K is the closer match on paper, but the 270K Plus offers more cores and stronger overall performance for roughly similar money.
The best choice depends on the workload, but Core Ultra is not an especially compelling upgrade for gaming. A Core i7-14600K can deliver strong gaming performance, and choosing a DDR4-compatible platform may save a substantial amount on the motherboard and memory. Intel’s newer lineup focused more on efficiency, so it does not represent a huge generational performance jump in every application.
