Why is my iPhone 17 Pro Max suddenly overheating and draining its battery?

On Wednesday, I had about 8 hours of active screen time and used 68% of the battery, which is normal for me since I use my phone for work. Today, though, I've used roughly 168% of the battery with only 4 hours of screen time, so I've already had to charge it twice. The phone also became noticeably warm while playing music over Bluetooth last night. The only recent change I can think of is upgrading my iCloud storage. My battery health still shows 100%. What could be causing this sudden drain and heat?

Also check Battery Health and Charging. Since the battery health is still at 100%, the battery itself probably isn’t worn out. A background process, such as an iCloud sync or backup, is more likely to be responsible.

I turned off iCloud backup, and the phone cooled down within about five minutes. That may have been the cause, although I’m not sure why the backup process suddenly became so intensive.

Check Settings > Battery to see whether an app or system process is using an unusually large amount of power in the background. That should help identify what is keeping the phone active.

I checked the battery activity and nothing obvious appears to be running in the background.
