I've heard that Android is based on Linux, so I'm wondering why standard Linux programs—such as AppImage files or other Linux executables—usually can't be run on Android. Is Android too different from desktop Linux, or does it mainly come down to hardware and missing software components?

Android does use the Linux kernel, but it’s a heavily customized operating system with a completely different userspace and application environment. Desktop Linux normally uses components such as glibc, X11 or Wayland, and common desktop libraries. Android uses its own equivalents, so a normal Linux GUI program usually won’t find the interfaces and libraries it expects. Terminal programs can sometimes be used through tools like Termux, but desktop applications need much more work.
An AppImage isn’t really the Linux equivalent of a Windows .exe. It’s a bundled Linux application format, but it still depends on the Linux environment and CPU architecture it was built for. Android devices commonly use ARM processors, while many AppImages are compiled for x86-64 computers. Even with the right architecture, missing libraries or graphics systems can prevent the program from running.
“Based on Linux” doesn’t mean Android is interchangeable with a desktop Linux distribution. Linux technically refers to the kernel, while the complete operating system also includes the libraries, services, drivers, graphical system, and other tools around it. Android replaces or changes many of those pieces and provides its own app framework, so Android apps and desktop Linux executables are loaded and run differently.
Some specialized devices also run Linux but only support software compiled specifically for that device. The same idea applies here: the program has to match the processor architecture and the operating environment. Android can run certain command-line Linux software with extra compatibility tools, but running a random desktop AppImage directly generally isn’t supported.
