My laptop has 16 GB of RAM, but it shows around 50% memory usage even when I'm not actively doing anything. That seems unusually high to me. Is this normal behavior, and is there anything I should do to reduce it or find out what's using the memory?

That level of idle usage can be completely normal. Windows uses available memory for system processes, caching, and background services, then releases it when applications need more. The important things to check are whether the computer feels slow, whether memory usage stays near 90–100%, and which programs appear at the top of Task Manager.
Unused RAM isn’t necessarily beneficial—Windows tries to use spare memory to improve responsiveness. You generally don’t need to change anything unless you’re experiencing slowdowns, crashes, or consistently high memory usage. Installing more RAM would only help if your normal workload is actually running out of it.
