I'm upgrading from an RX 6700 XT and comparing an RX 7800 XT priced at 550 CAD with an RX 9070 GRE that would cost 784 CAD after tax. Which card offers the better value, and is the newer architecture worth paying the extra 234 CAD for?

The RX 9070 GRE could make more sense if you plan to keep the card for several years and care about newer features, driver support, and power efficiency. However, the price difference is hard to justify when the actual gaming performance gap is relatively small. If you upgrade again within a couple of years, the 7800 XT is the better value.
The RX 7800 XT looks like the easy choice at that price. The gaming performance is fairly close, but saving 234 CAD is significant. It also has more VRAM, which can be useful for higher resolutions and future games.
