My roughly seven-year-old gaming PC recently lost its motherboard, so I need to replace the platform. I have a Ryzen 7 2700X, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4-3200, an EVGA RTX 3070, a Corsair RM750x power supply, and two 1TB Samsung 870 SSDs. The motherboard was an ASUS Prime X470-Pro.
I'm considering two CPU-and-motherboard deals. The AM4 option costs about $418 and includes a Ryzen 7 5800X3D with an ASUS TUF Gaming B550-PLUS WiFi II, letting me reuse my existing DDR4 memory. The AM5 option costs about $569 and includes a Ryzen 5 9600X, an MSI PRO X870-P WiFi motherboard, and 16GB of DDR5-6000 memory. Both bundles include a Cooler Master 240mm AIO as a free gift.
I mainly play games such as GTA V, Forza Horizon, Football Manager, and Battlefield. I occasionally run hydrology models or CAD software for work, but gaming is the main priority. I can afford either option, but the AM4 bundle would save money and let me reuse my current RAM. Is moving to AM5 worth the extra cost for the newer platform and future upgrade path, or would the 5800X3D be the better value for this system?

For your current graphics card and the games you listed, the cheaper AM4 route is likely enough. The 5800X3D would be a major improvement over the 2700X, and you could put the savings toward a future GPU or a larger memory kit. Choose AM5 if you specifically want a longer-lived platform, not because the immediate gaming improvement will necessarily be dramatic.
Before deciding, check whether a less expensive AM5 bundle is available. A Ryzen 5 7500X3D bundle with a motherboard and DDR5 can sometimes cost less than the 5800X3D package, while also moving you to AM5. Since you’re buying new memory anyway, 2x16GB would be preferable for a new build; a single 16GB stick is usable temporarily, but dual-channel memory is better long term.
That particular deal may only be available for in-store pickup, so availability depends on where you live. It’s still worth checking other retailers and bundle builders for a similar AM5 price.
